Outpatient US Clinical Experience in Psychiatry in Chicago

What you will do:

You will be under the supervision of a physician who is board-certified in psychiatry. As Adjunct Faculty at the Mercy Health Janesville Family Medicine Residency Program, he has residents from the program rotating through his outpatient practice. He is dedicated to education, and is the recipient of a teaching award from the residency program for restructuring its behavioral health curriculum.

In this practice, you will encounter patients with depression, anxiety, PTSD, ADHD, among other conditions. Although he sees a largely adult population, some children as seen as well. Approximately 10 patients are seen per day, mostly in-person appointments with a small percentage of telehealth. The focus of his treatment is on medication management so this will be an excellent opportunity to learn the ins and outs of the different medications used to treat mental illness. Following each encounter, there will be in-depth discussion of the patient.

Please note that this preceptor is invested in helping his students succeed. Assuming that the student performs well, he is open to connecting the student with residency programs to which he has ties. For example, he lectures every month to the residents at Mercy Health in Janesville. Students rotating with him will accompany him to the hospital where they may have the chance to meet the Program Director and Chief Resident of the family medicine residency program.

During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision:

• Interviewing patients (in the presence of the preceptor).

• Writing simulated written notes (no EMR) for preceptor review.

• Researching the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.

• Delivering talks about important topics or issues in the specialty.

• Gaining an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of other healthcare professionals.
