Information about this clinical experience:
You will be under the supervision of a physician who is board-certified in neurology. The preceptor is a core faculty member of a neurology residency program, and is actively involved in the education of neurology residents. Neurology residents rotate through the clinic, and the preceptor also rounds daily in the hospital with residents of the program. This is a neurology residency program based at three hospitals - Southern Hills Hospital and Medical Center, Mountain View Hospital, and Sunrise Children's Hospital and Medical Center.
This is an office-based neurology rotation during which you will see patients with a wide variety of neurological conditions. You will be able to hone your skills in history-taking, gain confidence in your ability to perform the neurological exam, present cases, and document your findings. Opportunities to observe procedures in the office, including EEG and NCV, will be made available to rotators.
On Thursday afternoons, you will take part in the academic half-day with the residents. These are didactics that have been developed for the neurology residents. These will take place either in-person or via Zoom.
During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision:
Taking patient histories.
Perfroming exams under the physician's supervision.
Presenting patients.
Entering notes in the EMR.
Researching the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.
Educating patients.
Gaining an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of other healthcare professionals.
Who should consider this rotation:
International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in neurology.
How to obtain a letter of recommendation:
The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.
During the rotation:
Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.
Testimonials
Dr. X is incredibly engaging and truly loves to teach. From the very first day I felt welcome and like I was part of the team. This welcoming atmosphere not only came from the doctor, but also from the office staff, medical assistants and other providers. Everyone was kind, patient, and happy to teach. Dr. X exemplifies the kind of pediatrician that I hope to be. The doctor puts patients first, really attempts to get to know them and their families, attempts to understand the patients point of view in a non-judgmental way, and truly
cares about the patients physical and mental wellbeing. During the month I was given increasing autonomy to see patients, develop a differential diagnosis, and come up with a plan. Over the month I was able to form a strong bond with Dr. X and will certainly stay in touch with the doctor as someone I turn to for not only medical advice, but life advice. I would highly recommend this rotation to learners of all levels.
