Inpatient/Outpatient US Clinical Experience in Obstetrics & Gynecology in Chicago
What you will do:
You will be under the supervision of a physician who is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology. This is a physician with considerable experience in teaching and is involved in the education of residents from the Ascension Illinois obstetrics and gynecology residency program. This attending interacts with residents in the operating room and labor and delivery suite. This physician holds a hospital appointment at Ascension Illinois.
You will spend time in the outpatient clinic and hospital. In the clinic, the volume of patients seen on a typical day is approximately 15 patients. In the hospital, you will accompany the physician to the operating room and labor/delivery suite. Rotators can expect to visit the hospital at least 2-3 times over the course of a four-week rotation.
Among the conditions or issues you will encounter in this practice include:
Prenatal care
Postpartum care
High-risk pregnancy
Pelvic pain
Uterine fibroids
Endometriosis
Abnormal uterine bleeding
Heavy menstrual bleeding
Vaginitis
Contraception
Urinary incontinence
Infertility
Since many patients will be presenting for prenatal care, please read the Chapter 6 in the following document to help prepare you for these patient encounters and enhance your learning:

During your experience, you will learn the following U.S. medical practices under the preceptor’s supervision:
Taking patient histories.
Performing exams under the physician's supervision.
Presenting patients.
Researching the literature to answer clinical questions at the point of care.
Developing an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of other healthcare professionals.
Who should consider this rotation:
International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in obstetrics and gynecology. Please note that, because of the preferences of this physician's patient population, only female students are eligible to complete this rotation.
How to obtain a letter of recommendation:
The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft.
During the rotation:
Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.
