UAB International Visiting Medical Observership: Tips for Applying

UAB Observership Program

What can you do during the UAB Observership Experience?

As is the case with all university observership programs, you may only shadow at UAB. What this means is that you may not interact whatsoever with patients. In fact, UAB clearly states that observers who violate this policy may be subject to removal from the experience. Although hands-on activities are prohibited, you will have opportunities to observe rounds, conferences, and procedures.

Who is eligible?

The program is open to graduating international medical students or recent international medical graduates.

What is required to apply?

Applicants must submit a completed application along with supporting documents, including three letters of recommendation, a personal statement, a copy of the medical school diploma and final transcript, and a passing USMLE Step 1 score report. Note that USMLE Step 2 and 3 score reports are preferred but not required. The program requires minimum TOEFL scores but will waive this requirement if English is your first language or if you attended a school where the education was delivered in English. Some applicants will be invited for a virtual online Zoom interview which will serve as a means for UAB to assess your command of the English language.

What is the selection process?

A small percentage of applicants are successful in securing observer positions. In fact, UAB states that “due to the highly competitive application process, only top-ranked international medical graduates will be accepted.” Among the factors that are considered are the number of years and experience since graduation, grades on transcript, strength of letters of recommendation, and personal statement

How long can you observe?

Maximum is 8 weeks (two separate four-week opportunities)

How far in advance should you apply?

Completed applications should be received six months before your intended start date.

Is there an application fee?

Yes. There is a $350 application fee which is non-refundable.

What is the observership fee?

The fee for a four-week observership experience is $3,995.

What are the other fees?

The observership fee does not include housing, transportation, or meals. You must also purchase medical insurance for this program.

What else is involved in the onboarding process?

Once you are approved as an observer, you must submit proof of having had a physical exam within one year of your start date. Documentation showing that you are current with immunizations is also required. Please note that UAB is strict with regards to the timely completion and submission of pre-arrival requirements. UAB reserves the right to cancel your rotation without a refund if you fail to respond to their email inquiries or you do not submit their requirements at least two weeks prior to your start date.

What is the cancellation policy?

Observers who cancel less than 60 days before the start date will not receive a refund. One half your fee will be refunded to you if you cancel more than 60 days before your start date. Full refunds minus administrative fees may be given to applicants who are refused a visa by the US embassy as long as the request to cancel is made more than 90 days before the start date.

Where can I get more information for the UAB observership?

You can send your questions to observer@uab.edu.
