Information about this clinical experience:

(Please note that this rotation will strictly be an observership) You will be under the supervision of a physician who is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology. The doctor holds hospital privileges at Brooklyn Hospital, Maimonides Medical Center, and NYU Langone Medical Center, and was the former program director of the obstetrics and gynecology residency program at Lutheran Medical Center.

The preceptor has been practicing in New York for over two decades. During this time, the doctor has actively been involved in numerous physician organization and held leadership positions in the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and Brooklyn Gynecological Society.

The attending has been a tireless contributor to community service, advocacy, and efforts to reduce healthcare disparities. The doctor is the recipient of numerous awards because of dedication and commitment to these causes.

The preceptor has been teaching international medical students and graduates for years, and is known as a wonderful mentor who really cares for students and their future. To allow students to understand the perspectives of other specialists in the field, the doctor also likes to have students spend clinical time with other obstetrics and gynecology colleagues in the office. What this means is you will get a chance to build relationships with other doctors and other professionals in the practice. This includes other specialists in the field, midwives, and nurses.

Please note that in the U.S. midwives are involved in approximately 10% of births. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and American College of Nurse-Midwives have released a joint statement encouraging mutual collaboration among both groups in patient care.

Residency programs are increasingly incorporating interprofessional education within their curricula to prepare trainees to work effectively with midwives for the shared goal of improving perinatal care.

You will see patients in the office. You will assist clinic staff with patient intake and vital signs, and accompany the preceptor and colleagues as they evaluate and manage patients with a variety of obstetrical and gynecological conditions. Among the conditions you will encounter:

  • Painful menstruation

  • Heavy or irregular menstrual cycles

  • Fibroids

  • Abnormal Pap smears

  • HPV

  • Urinary incontinence

  • Pelvic pain and endometriosis

  • Perimenopause and Menopause

  • High-risk pregnancy

  • Infertility

  • Contraception and family planning

Rotators should send the certificate of completion to us.

Who should consider this rotation:

International medical graduates (IMGs) and students seeking US clinical experience in obstetrics and gynecology. IMGs seeking careers in family medicine will also find this rotation useful as obstetrical and gynecological care is an important part of a career in this specialty.

How to obtain a letter of recommendation:

The rotator should ask the preceptor for a LOR near the conclusion of the rotation. Dr. Desai has provided the physician with guidelines about best practices in letter writing that meet residency program requirements. In some cases, the preceptor may ask the rotator to write a letter of recommendation draft. Because you will be working with the preceptor and colleagues, the main preceptor will write the letter of recommendation after acquiring feedback about your performance from all parties involved.

During the rotation:

Our team will be checking in periodically with you to ensure that you are having an optimal experience. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions during the rotation.

Dr. X’s rotation was extremely helpful in developing my clinical acumen with infectious diseases and rounding on multiple patients in a day. I learned how to manage patients in a multidisciplinary manner daily from an infectious point of view
